The Duchess fight, her phases, and her identity are all heavy story spoilers for the first dungeon. Reveal only if you’ve cleared Queensbury Crypt or don’t mind being spoiled.
The Duchess of Queensbury is the boss at the end of Queensbury Crypt, the first canon dungeon and the guardian of the first failing Spark Generator. The crypt is a graveyard of tombs and statues, and a macabre meta-puzzle leads you to her arena.
In the official manual’s words: “Buried under decades of rock and rubble, The Duchess rules over the posthumous sanctum with a vengeance… This eldritch horror, masquerading as the long lost companion of the timid Duke, may point to the extent of the corruption plaguing Tenebrous Isle.” The fight has an implied tragic story at its core.

Phase 1 — The statue
The Duchess first appears as a giant animated statue. This is a patience fight, not a damage race:
- Read her tells and strafe. Don’t square up against her. Watch for the wind-up on her heavy swings and dodge around her instead of trading.
- Punish commitments with charged hits. The Blaststrike Maul’s charged swings are ideal — land a big hit only when she has clearly committed to an attack and can’t react.
Phase 2 — The tentacles
Once you deplete her first health bar, she sprouts tentacles that burrow under the arena floor before erupting where you stand.
- Keep moving. The tentacles target your position, so standing still gets you hit.
- Burrow to dodge eruptions. As a tentacle is about to surface beneath you, Hollow underground to slip the hit, then resurface and resume your punishes.
Clearing the Duchess restores the first Spark Generator and opens up more of the island. While you’re in the crypt, don’t miss the Duke’s escort quest— escorting him to his casket rewards the Proto Spark trinket, one of the best items in the game.
| Attack | Tell | Counter / Dodge |
|---|---|---|
| Statue melee (Phase 1) | The giant animated statue winds up and commits to a heavy swing | Read the tell, strafe and dodge rather than trading blows, then punish the committed attack with a charged hit. |
| Erupting tentacles (Phase 2) | After her first health bar is depleted, tentacles burrow under the arena floor | The tentacles erupt where you are standing. Keep moving and burrow (Hollowing) to drop underground as one is about to surface beneath you. |
Spark Generator restored
Defeating the Duchess clears Queensbury Crypt and restores the first of the six failing Spark Generators.
