Spoilers ahead
Spoiler note: the Duchess's identity is tied to a tragic Crypt storyline.
The Duchess of Queensbury is the boss at the end of Queensbury Crypt, the first “canon” dungeon and Spark Generator. The Crypt is a graveyard of tombs and statues with a macabre meta-puzzle that funnels you into her arena, and the encounter carries an implied tragic story at its core.
Lore (spoiler)
“Buried under decades of rock and rubble, The Duchess rules over the posthumous sanctum with a vengeance. Is this truly the lost love for whom the Duke has been searching? This eldritch horror, masquerading as the long lost companion of the timid Duke, may point to the extent of the corruption plaguing Tenebrous Isle.”
She masquerades as the long-lost companion of the timid Duke — the NPC you can escort through the Crypt — which is what gives the fight its tragic weight.
Before the fight: grab the Proto Spark
Escort the Duke to his casket inside the Crypt to earn the Proto Spark trinket, which gives you a free save from death. It’s one of the best trinkets in the game and a huge safety net for this boss. Do this first.
How to Beat the Duchess
Phase 1 — The statue
She fights as a giant animated statue.
- Be patient and read the tells. When she raises her arms and commits to a swing, that’s your window.
- Strafe, don’t trade. Dodge around her instead of squaring up.
- Punish with charged hits. The Blaststrike Maul’s charged swings hit hard — land them when she’s locked into an attack, then back off.
Phase 2 — Tentacles
Deplete her first health bar and she sprouts tentacles that burrow under the arena floor before erupting where you’re standing.
- Watch the floor. Cracks signal an incoming eruption beneath your feet.
- Burrow to survive. Hollow underground the instant the floor breaks — you’re invincible while burrowed — then reposition before her next strike.
- Keep chipping. Stick to charged punishes between eruptions; don’t get greedy in the cramped windows.
