Sparks, Spark Generators & Spark Containers

Sparks are Mina’s lives and safety net. They gate certain doors, and running out while carrying Bones can wipe your entire purse. Restoring six failing Spark Generators is the main quest.

What Sparks are

Sparks are Mina’s lives and safety net. She starts with one available. As you explore you collect Spark Containers, and a trinket grants one more — together that makes a total of five Sparks you can burn through before things go badly wrong.

Sparks do double duty. Some locked doors are “Spark doors” that won’t open unless you have collected a minimum number of Spark orbs, so they also act as soft progression gates.

Why Sparks protect your Bones

The cruel part: if you die with no Sparks on your person, you lose all the Bones you’re carrying. Sparks are the buffer between a normal death and losing your whole purse, so the golden rule is don’t wander around sparkless while holding a fat stack of pocketed Bones. The Spark Catcher trinket adds a container and helps you recover lost Sparks, and the Bell of Grace gives you a chance to hang on to a Spark when you fall.

The six Spark Generators (the main quest)

The whole adventure is built around six failing Spark Generators. Each one sits far from Ossex, the central hub, and each is guarded by a boss. You can restore them in any order — the world is non-linear — and, as with everything else, you never strictly need trinkets or special gear to reach and beat them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Sparks in Mina the Hollower?
Sparks act as your lives and safety net. Mina starts with one Spark; collecting Spark Containers and a Spark-granting trinket raises that to a total of five. They also gate certain locked doors.
What happens if I lose all my Sparks?
If you die with no Sparks on your person, you lose all of the Bones you were carrying. Sparks are the buffer that protects your purse, so don’t run around sparkless with a big pile of pocketed Bones.
How many Spark Generators are there?
Six. Each failing Spark Generator sits far from the Ossex hub and is guarded by a boss, and restoring all six is the game’s main objective. You can tackle them in any order.
What are Spark doors?
Some doors require a minimum number of Spark orbs to open. You need to have collected enough Sparks before they’ll let you through.
How do I get more Sparks?
Spark Containers add to your maximum, and the Spark Catcher trinket grants one extra container plus helps you recover lost Sparks. The Bell of Grace gives a chance to keep a Spark when you die.
