How to Beat Thorne (First Boss)

Thorne is the principal antagonist of Mina the Hollower and the first major boss you fight. A bat and the former head of Baron Lionel’s guard, he betrays the Baron and — alongside his shock troopers — destroys the Spark Generators that power Tenebrous Isle. He confronts Mina in an arena soon after she arrives, and beating him concludes the game’s opening stage.

This is a teaching fight. It eases you into the rhythm that every boss in the game shares: read the tell, dodge with Hollowing, and punish in short bursts.

How to beat Thorne

  1. Equip the Nightstar. The whip’s long reach keeps you out of trident range while you learn his pattern. Newer players should not try to brawl him up close.
  2. Attack in small bursts. His trident throws a tracking series of three strikes. Land one or two pokes, then immediately break off and reposition so you are never caught mid-combo.
  3. Hug the edges against bombs. When he lays a bomb trail, stay near the arena perimeter and avoid the ground he just crossed until the bombs detonate.
  4. Burrow through tornadoes. When he dispels the expanding ring of tornadoes, Hollow underground. You are invincible while burrowed, so the whole burst passes over you.
  5. Heal only once, at range. Healing leaves Mina immobile, and Thorne’s hits cancel the heal. Drink a Plasma Vial only when you have created real distance, ideally just after he commits to an attack.

When his health is gone, Thorne does not fall — he flees on the brink of death, leaving Mina (and you) with far more questions than answers. For who he really is and why he turned, see his character page.

No. On defeat Thorne flees rather than dying — "very mysterious," as the fight's coverage puts it. He returns later in the story.
