Bones, Bone Up & Bonestone

Bones are the currency and XP of Tenebrous Isle. Spend them to buy gear and to Bone Up (level up), bank them as Bonestone to keep them safe, and beware the Soulslike death penalty.

Bones are money and XP at once

Bones are the primary currency of Tenebrous Isle, dropped by enemies and found out in the world. You spend them to buy items, weapons and keys, and to Bone Up — the game’s term for leveling. That makes them both your wallet and your experience bar, so every Bone is a small decision: spend now, level up, or bank it.

The economy scales with progression — newer zones drop bigger piles — which means early losses sting far more than late ones.

Bone Up: choosing what to improve

When you’ve collected enough Bones you automatically Bone Up and pick a category:

  • Attack — raise it if fights are dragging.
  • Defense — raise it if you’re dying fast.
  • Sidearm Damage — raise it if you lean on Sidearms.
  • Convert to Bonestone — bank the value as safe, permanent progress.

The three core stats (Attack, Defense, Sidearm Damage) each cap at level 10. Longer term, the permanent upgrades from the Provisioner matter more: max health (Health Rose), extra Trinket slots (Trinket Bag), Spark capacity (Spark Container), Plasma (Vial Pouch) and Joules (Joule Box).

Bonestone and the death penalty

This is a Soulslike, and death has teeth. On death you drop all pocketed Bones at the spot you fell and lose your equipped Sidearm. Early on you get one chance to fight your way back and pick the Bones up (including anything you earn on the way) — but die again before you reach them and they’re lost for good. Running out of Sparks while holding pocketed Bones risks the whole pile.

The safe play is to convert Bones to Bonestone at the Underlab or bank with vendors: Bonestone is death-proof. Beginner advice is to prioritise bank capacity and not walk around with withdrawn Bonestone. The Bell of Grace trinket can save half or all of your Bones on a sparkless death, and the Proto Spark revive keeps you alive to recover them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Bones used for in Mina the Hollower?
Bones are the currency of Tenebrous Isle. You spend them to buy items, weapons and keys, and to Bone Up (level up). They double as both money and experience.
What is Bone Up?
When you collect enough Bones you automatically Bone Up and choose a category to improve — Attack, Defense or Sidearm Damage — or convert Bones into Bonestone, or save. The three core stats each cap at level 10.
What is Bonestone?
Bonestone is Bones converted into banked, safe progress. Unlike pocketed Bones, banked Bonestone is not lost when you die — so converting Bones to Bonestone is how you lock in your gains.
What happens to my Bones when I die?
On death you drop all carried (pocketed) Bones at the spot you fell and lose your currently equipped Sidearm. You get one chance to fight back and recover the dropped Bones; die again before reaching them and they’re gone for good. Bonestone banked at vendors is always safe.
How many Bones are there in total?
There are 266,921 Bones to collect across the whole game, per Yacht Club Games’ own promotional numbers.
